Depending on the vehicle and construction, the fuel filter is located either in the tank or on the fuel line between the tank and motor.
Particles are filtered out of petrol or diesel fuel; the water contained in diesel fuel is also filtered out.
Genuine BMW Fuel Filters prevent contamination or corrosion from damaging the highly sensitive injection system or the injector nozzles.

The modern fuel injection systems in BMW engines are especially dependent on pure, clean fuel. For diesel vehicles especially, the quality of the fuel filter plays a crucial role because diesel injection systems are very sensitive to contaminants. Genuine BMW Fuel Filters use high-grade materials that can filter particles up to 4 ΅m (0.004 millimeter!) or 99.5%.

In the winter, diesel tends to coagulate into a solid form and clog the filter due to the relatively high percentage of paraffin. All BMW diesel models have a heater element in the fuel filter tested and matched to the flow rate that prevents the paraffin from coagulating at very
cold ambient temperatures.

Secure seal even in an accident
The casings of Genuine BMW Fuel Filters are specially welded using inert gas so that the housing remains sealed even under extreme deformation, preventing fuel leakage and thus reducing the risk of fire.
Quality assurance
The cleaning effectiveness of the fuel filter is crucially dependent on the paper quality. Paper samples are continuously tested during production.
Comprehensive Tests
The mass per unit area of the paper must still conform to BMW specifications under tests conducted, for example, a 30 minute heating to +100 °C and subsequent conditioning. Using similar methods, the papers air permeability and tensile strength is checked.
Cleaning efficiency
In the bubble test, the pressure required to let air bubbles pass through a paper sample is measured. The permeability of the largest pores inside and outside of the kinks of the folds and the normal pores outside the kinks are separately tested.
Pressure resistance test
To reduce fire hazard in the event of an accident, a clamped circular sample is tested to destruction by uniformly increasing pressure during the burst resistance test. The durability of the fuel filter must, according to BMWs strict standards, surpass the required German Industry Standard.
